Be Inspired by Others, Weird & Wonderful!

Erwin Wurm's 'One minute Sculptures'

After watching a familiar music video of The Red Hot Chili Peppers 'Can't Stop' I noticed how unusual it seemed & decided to check out the quote at the end of the video which reads 'inspired by the 'One Minute Sculptures of Erwin Wurm' to find out where the idea sparked from. The video possesses a really bizarre & eccentric vibe which is preformed by the band in a very experimental & wonderfully enthusiastic way. I found the Austrian artists work to be totally original & as expected (like the video) quite barmy! The 'One Minute Sculptures' are an ongoing art project by Wurm, beginning in the 1980s, which he combines sculpture & performance as it involves himself, his model or performer to act out the poses of his viewers. The performance is only available for one minute so is recorded by photographs & the poses usually include unusual relationships between ordinary objects such as clothes, sticks, pencils etc.

His work is full of expression & displays humour in a very creative way. I think its very inventive of him to create work which is so out of the ordinary & I would love to possessive just a little of his boldness & experimentation as an artist. I find it especially wonderful that he managed to inspire a group of people to make a music video similar to his art work, therefore I am beginning to look around me at unusual things that could inspire me without my realising.

'Fat Cars'

Wurm also more recently created an exhibition entitled 'Fat Cars' including puffed out polyurethane foam cars which are layered with lacquer. He made the cars 'puffy' by injecting the cars with styrofoam & fiberglass. This was a way of him poking fun at the worlds personal & cultural values, as it seems that the world is wanting to stay skinny but everyday indulging in more & more with constant advertising of food, wealth & greed. He has displayed the issue of weight gain coming naturally with wealth by only using the typical 'fancy sports cars' that rich people can afford which I think is a really clever & sophisticated way of discussing the everyday issues of obesity & greed whilst still possessing a humours side.

Overall I have really found his work to be a great inspiration & realising this has come as a surprise, with it not being my usual style of work, which has proved to be refreshing.
