Liverpool Design Week

To get some inspiration for future projects and to just experience some artists work in the flesh instead of from the computer screen, I decided to attend Liverpool Design Week. I found that there was a great variety of fabulous work that was beautifully crafted. There was so much to offer from print, surface design, interior design, fashion, textiles and 3D sculptures that I was blown away! There were a few particular exhibitions that really captured my imagination because oft he creativity and experimentation used in the work.

Katie Heeks Designs of 'Gardens of Delight' were very original and delicate, using laser cutting to create gardens of people's imagination. I admire how she has used very simple silhouettes and added detail with such precision that they have turned into something that appears detailed. Her gardens seemed really special to me and her idea behind them makes them really personal to the buyer and they seem somewhat magical to me.

"The idea behind my latest work, Gardens of Personal Delight, is that it is a little world dedicated to peoples dreams & passions". Quote taken from Katie Heek from her website www.katieheeksdesigns.com.

Another artists work who I was particularly attracted to was the Interactive Wallpaper by Rachel Kelly. I have previously done a presentation on Rachel Kelly's work for a brief on wallpaper in my first year of my degree and I  found that when I researched more into her work I loved it! It was beautifully displayed with fabric pieces hanging down and the lighting that was added behind the pieces on the wall looked fantastic and really brought them to life, also it was great to finally see Rachel's work in the flesh! I really enjoy how her work is interactive so you can play about with it and in pretty much design your own wallpaper, so it becomes very personal.

When I saw her work again at Liverpool Design Week I was just as thrilled with her wallpaper deigns as I was in the past! The flower designs were really attractive and detailed and it was really interesting to see the same design on different materials and objects and in different colour ways, as you got a really good feel as what it would look like in interior design. The way that she takes the flower patterns and groups them into a shape (like a circle) makes the designs really interesting and even though all the designs include floral patterns the designs are always different from one another and unique.
