Susan Stockwell

I was recently introduced to artist Susan Stockwell who creates the most beautiful artwork out of unusual materials. I especially enjoy her work as she uses lots of paper and maps in her work which are both strong loves of mine. Her work has interesting meanings to it and I would love to see her work in the flesh.

The last four images are from an exhibition of hers called 'All Stitched Up' which was based on her re using waste materials that you would normally throw away. This links in with what I am currently studying as I have looked at lots of artists who up cycle materials to make new sustainable items. It also links in with my current brief as she has produced some quilts, which is what I am currently working on. As I am very fond of maps and paper I am thinking about producing some paper collages that are like maps of my personal experience through this brief on sustainability.

Another thing that interested me with the 'All Stitched Up' exhibition was that the green, red and blue patchwork quilt (third image form the bottom)was created by Wandsworth Prison from some workshops that they did with Fine Cell Work. As I have only recently discussed an article with my class mates on this organisation I found it really interesting and inspiring to see what they active and see how they work with other artists. I think the results of the organisation are clearly fantastic and productive!

Susan Stockwell's website is really brilliant with lots of displays of her work and influences : http://www.susanstockwell.co.uk
