Alexander Wang - Fall 2012 Women's Ready-to-Wear Collection

Alexander Wang is a fashion designer that I have always been aware of but only briefly glanced at in passing in advertisements like magazines such as vogue. Upon recently browsing on tumblr I came across an image (above) which featured a top from one of his designs from his Fall 2012 Women's Ready-to-Wear collection. After doing a little bit of research I found the collection online and was really impressed with what I found. The collection features unusual materials that have been manipulated in unfamiliar ways. Wang used limited colours of black, white and maroon on materials such as leather, cotton and wool to create this extravagant collection that has a look of expense and luxury. The muted colours were brought to life with the detail in the garments such as glossy surfaces and textured materials making it a truly unique and interesting assortment to view. Although the collection displays quite an expensive look I feel it also has a grungey and erie kind of vibe due to the dark colours and dusty looking textures created on the fabrics. There is also a sense of concealment created by Wang with the netted turtlenecks being pulled up over the models faces and the zipped and buttoned up jackets which gives of a mysterious aura. I think I am most drawn to this collection because being a lover of geometric designs I am most drawn to shapes and I can see a lot of shape in the materials used such as the circles in the netting and the panelling on the leather jackets. These shapes created by Wang destructing the materials also display quite structural patterns to me as the netted turtlenecks and socks remind me of caging, mesh and netted gates. I am really pleased that I stumbled upon this collection as it has lured me to look more at Wang's collections and his designs are very acquired to my taste. I can take a lot more from his fashion designs than just gaining a designer to like as I see a lot of depth to his construction, textures and fabrics used which I feel that I could apply to my work.
