Debbie Smith - Drawing With Thread / Neville Johnson Window Display

For some research for my current project I started to look at work that included quite a bit of line. My reason's for this being that my work has contained more lines and basic shapes than detail. I am starting to look more at the structure of buildings and the frame work rather then details on the buildings such as windows or brick work etc. When browsing the internet I found the artist Debbie Smith and discovered that she was an artist who quite frequently draws buildings in her work. At first glance I thought that her work was created using ink and paper but when I read more into her work I found that it wasn't ink but thread and pins! She hammers pins into a hard surface and wraps thread around them to create structures so she is in effect drawing with thread. Using these materials brings the buildings out to the viewer and gives them a 3D feel making them more interesting. Below are some examples of her work with pins and thread.

On her blog I found a post where she created a window installation for Neville Johnson in London. She stated that they are a Manchester based company so her job was to bring London and Manchester together in the window display. She used her drawing with thread method to create Manchester and London buildings onto white boxes so that the display was visible on the inside and the outside of the shop. I think the display is very eye catching and it's probably a shop window display that I would stop and look at as the different levels of the buildings on the boxes are interesting to the eye. This display also shows how the topic of buildings that I am looking at can be used in a commercial way to sell stuff. It's a simple and quickly thought of idea but I can imagine it took her a long time to create and it worked really well and is very effective and eye pleasing. Below are some example of her window display.
